The University of Amsterdam (UvA) aims to attract the world’s brightest students to its international classrooms, therefore, outstanding students from outside the European Economic Area (holding a non-EEA nationality) wishing to study at UvA can apply for an Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (AMS).
The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship can sometimes be supplemented with the Holland Scholarship, of which the UvA is a participating member. This scholarship is collectively offered by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science and participating Dutch universities.
Candidates wishing to take part in the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship programme must meet the following requirements:
- Hold a non-EU/non-EEA passport and not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans
- Be fully admitted to a degree programme at the University of Amsterdam.
- Be admitted to a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at the UvA for the first time. AMS will not be awarded to candidates who are admitted for a second Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at UvA.
- Be able to comply with Dutch visa regulations (visit the IND website).
- Be enrolled at UvA as full-time student for the academic year and the programme for which the scholarship is awarded.
- The candidate should not receive a full coverage scholarship for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship. Notify the scholarships office when another full scholarship has been awarded and accepted.
The AMS is highly selective. Applicants will be selected on the basis of academic merit, such as grade average, letter of recommendation and motivation. See official website for complete selection criteria.

All available Masters degree programs offered at the university. Students interested in an AMS should contact the faculty or international school offering the study programme of their choice for more information.
Number of awards
Not specified, but in the past, about 120 scholarships are awarded every year
Selected students receive a scholarship for the official duration of the programme they are enrolled in. The scholarship for one-and-a-half or two-year programmes will only be renewed if the student is making satisfactory progress towards the degree. Scholarship continuation is not guaranteed when a candidate changes his or her degree programme.
The value of the grant is €6,000 – €21,000. The scholarship consists of €6,000, €9,000 or €12,000 but awards are based on the comprehensive financial plan, which should demonstrate the extent of the need for additional funding.
Please note that the scholarship cannot be used as a (partial) tuition waiver. The applicant must still pay the full amount of tuition due. Scholarship holders will receive their grant in monthly installments.
Method of Application
You must have been fully admitted to a degree program at UVA before you can be considered for this scholarship. The AMS scholarships are awarded by the faculties and graduate schools themselves, so application procedures vary per faculty/school.
Applicants must contact the faculty or international school offering the study programme of their choice for more information on specific application procedure and requirements.
Deadlines vary per faculty/graduate school (1st March/1st April/1st June every year). Generally however, applications for an AMS scholarship should be submitted before 1 April for September enrollment, AND before 1 August for studies starting in February.
The programme you wish to apply for might set extra requirements such as academic and language requirements. Please see the faculty information on the official website for more information.
The candidate must not receive a full-coverage scholarship from another organisation for the same period of study as the AMS scholarship and must be able to comply with Dutch visa regulations.
